A useful cable RFQ tells each supplier exactly which product and delivery scope to price. A total metre figure and a model name often leave important assumptions unresolved. Build the enquiry from the approved cable schedule and keep alternatives clearly marked.
1. Identify each cable line
- Use a BOQ line number and circuit or route reference.
- State the required voltage designation, conductor material, core arrangement and cross-section.
- Include insulation, sheath, armour and any specified performance requirements.
- Identify the relevant project specification, standard and drawing revision.
2. Separate total length from cut lengths
Show the required length for each run, the number of runs and the total. Record spare allowances separately. Ask suppliers to identify the proposed drum arrangement and any length tolerances or delivery constraints in their offer.
3. Define accessories and interfaces
List joints, terminations, glands, lugs and supports where they form part of the purchase package. Describe the equipment interfaces and identify components supplied by another contractor. Avoid assuming that a cable quotation automatically includes installation accessories.
4. Request evidence for the proposed product
| Item | Include in the enquiry |
|---|---|
| Datasheet | The actual offered manufacturer, cable designation, construction and ratings. |
| Test reports | The required test type and whether the report covers the quoted product. |
| Certificates | Holder, product scope, applicable standard, validity and any project approval requirement. |
| Deviations | A separate statement of every alternative, omission or qualification. |
5. Compare offers on the same commercial basis
Include destination, delivery terms, packing and labeling requirements, required delivery date and inspection arrangements. Ask for exclusions to be listed explicitly. Keep technical acceptance separate from price comparison so a substitution receives the appropriate review.
Before placing the order
Retain the approved schedule revision, the accepted datasheet, agreed deviations and commercial terms together. If drawings and quantities disagree, resolve the discrepancy with the project team before confirming the order.

Copy-and-fill enquiry template
Copy the template below into your email or enquiry. Replace each bracketed prompt with your details; brackets are placeholders, not product specifications. BOQ means Bill of Quantities (your material list), and RFQ means Request for Quotation. Write “To be confirmed” for anything you do not know yet. Send drawings or files separately by email if available.
